I'm published! Second author on a journal paper with a smaller audience than late-night cable! BUT I'M PUBLISHED!

Technically, our paper was accepted and it will be published within this year.

Now I should try and make progress on my biopunk fic.

5:30am: Arrive in a parking lot, and confused
6am: Managed to wander over to Union station, thank god for Google Maps. Au bon pain is open, but have the driest scones ever. Begin wait for the metro to start running.
6:30am: Wonder if I should have taken cab instead...

It's been a pretty crappy week so far...

Cut for possible TMI about doctor visits )

As for fandom stuff, I'm slowly working on the last chapter of Joey...

[livejournal.com profile] yuletide has released their full lists of eligible fandoms for this year. Much to my disappointment, they did trim YGO from the list after review. But at least I remember my shoujo/magical girl shows from the 90s. I do have to groan that Hetalia made the list though. As if you couldn't already go anywhere in anime fandom without tripping over a pile of Hetalia stuff... Ha! Hetalia was pruned. :P

If anyone is thinking of participating in yuletide this year, you do need an account with A3O to sign up and participate. The yuletide admins will be handing out the invites for the archive, so email them soonish if you don't want to end up at the end of the list.

[livejournal.com profile] ygodrabble is doing a Secret Santa drabble exchange. I'm definitely going to participate in that; just need to get my application in.

And there's the new round of [livejournal.com profile] kj_roundrobin that'll start soonish? I feel kind of selfish because I want to wait to see what the chosen bunny is before I decide to participate. Please don't hate me, [livejournal.com profile] darkmus! Two or three of the ones listed interest me, but others; I don't think I would do so well with.

So as mentioned previously, I'm headed up to New York City for the Comic Con/Anime Fest. Our bus ride is from 7AM to 3PM, so I'm still trying to make up my mind if I should stay up all night and just sleep on the bus or not. I won't have much internet this weekend, but hopefully I'll have some cool photos and stories to share when I get back!

Anyway, got a bit of packing to do and stuff to prepare so that the cats will be okay without us for three days (although I'm going to worry to death the entire time regardless).

At first, I was going to write this teal deer post about why the show Axis Powers Hetalia makes me uncomfortable and why I couldn't get past the first ten episodes or so. Then I realized, no one cares! xD

I would like to get the next chapter of Joey out this week, but I doubt it'll happen. Actually, I just checked and saw I had nearly 5000 words written. Unlike previous chapters, I don't have a hard point where I know I want to end so I may just dump this once it hits about 8000 words. I'll work on getting it out this weekend as long as I can wrestle the character relations into appropriate shape.

Mike and I will be heading to the New York Anime Fest/Comic Con next weekend. This naturally means I'm definitely not going to get any writing done then. Buying the weekend pass for either one gets you into the other, so it's a pretty sweet deal. I'm looking forward to eating yummy Asian food and awesome shopping again. I don't suppose anyone else is also going?

ETA Just saw the TF2 update. Hurray for the Polycount update! But man is the fanbase still going to rage over the added ability to buy the items with real world cash. If I can get the brain slug hat for less than $1, I am so there! ETA2 TF2 is also 50% off right now if anyone is interested.

Fuck you, Marxism.  Fuck you, dialectic materialism.  Fuck you, symbolic interaction.  Fuck you, the Yanomamo Indians of southern Venezuela and northern Brazil.  Fuck you, cross-cultural psych.  Fuck you, self for being such an unmotivated bitch...

Honestly, this class is nothing like I expected.  I do have an interest in cross-cultural, but this is definitely more in line with cultural anthropology.  >.>  I should just pay more attention to my lab work, that's the sort of cross-cultural research I care about.  Not Freud and his nutcase theory about the totem of man representing the primal killing of the king by a band of brothers, resulting in the "original sin" of the Oedipal complex.  Note to self: None of this will ever help in grad school.  Just pick easy classes from now on, stupid.

Well, I've had sufficient amount of time to goof off this weekend.  Went to see Eliot Chang on Friday night.  Turns out his Q&A was really supposed to be a workshop entitled "Asians in the Media."  We managed to snag a "yes" to an email interview for Big Straw.  I might write up a small piece to accompany the interview (well, someone will have to, and out of the four BS people that went to the event, I am probably the most inclined to write anything).  I think he'll be a good subject to interview for this issue's Big Starts theme.  Two pictures from the events below.

Saturday, we went to the Chili cookout for Homecoming weekend.  Got there late and didn't get any of the mugs.  Would have been good containers for chicken noodle soup.  We didn't get to try much chili either, so we gave up and went to eat crepes instead.  Afterwards, back to the UC for some pool.  The two guys were seasoned pool players and Angela and I were just lucky to aim straight.  Then battled David in Tetris because he just got his black DS lite.  I got my arse handed to me a few good times, then regained my ego by annihilating Angela twice.  Stacking FTW!  Then I actually squeezed in more studying before dinnertime.  The video collection room in the basement of the library is so depressing...

Went over to [livejournal.com profile] ketsugami's place, and saw last week's episode of Heroes.  It's showing more and more signs of lazy writing.  Got to go to dinner at a really nice place down by Station Square called The Melting Pot.  It was really delicious and really expensive...  Liz!  There was chocolate fondue desert!

Today, finished reading through the archive at P.H.D. comics and am feeling depressed over the future I have chosen to pursue.  Studied some more.  Watched the first episode of Red Garden, where Gonzo continues their trend of very WTF anime.  Then went crazy trying to make notes on 23 possible essay questions for tomorrow's midterm (not an open book/note test btw).  And I'm now writing this long entry to not have to look at that cursed thing anymore.

aka Let's Prove That Bastard Freud Right

Sexy music triggers teen sex

Psych 101: correlation != causation (as sexy as it might be). I tend to attribute the teen sex thing to the fact that teenagers are all horny little buggers (don't deny it, you know you were/are).

[livejournal.com profile] dm_san will be here later today and will be here until Thursday morning. There will be much fangirling (omg, hawt-vampire!Fay), poking (fun?) at her boyfriend (or at least I will be poking, hey, it's my way of salutations), and absolutely no sleep (just like senior year of high school again). Plans will include crepes, pool, ping pong, and more food.

Maybe an Otakon post a bit later. Not much to say other than to show off my new Larg (black Mokona) plushie. Alcoholics have all the fun (and sex, lol).

Dude, I love this mood theme. Hasune <3

Man, I wanna play hookey from work right now...

Oh, and every LJ should have a sex tag.

So life...

The summer has been uneventful for the most part. I work, for the most part, except when there are periods of downtime. Which would be now. I'm just playing WoW now. Personal life going okay, but there are probably a few things I should work on. All in good time.

So after most of the group members went on their mini-vacation, we're getting back to releasing those Tsubasa subs. (Oh the pressure of being the only group releasing it... or not...) Episode 11 was awesome (our translator decided to translate that before 11 but it won't be released before 10). There is nothing like Kaijura Yuki's music in the background for a fight between giant chibis (yes, I know that's an oxymoron). So look forward to episode 11!

On the other side of the slightly more professional life, the members of Big Straw that are still in Pittsburgh this summer has been commissioned to make a staff magazine/booklet/pamplet for the people at Ambient Intelligence Lab. It looks like we're going to have to rush the publication to get it done in time before school starts, since we'll be busy handling actual BS business then. It's a great opportunity for fund-raising. He has the money to sponsor our publication almost completely and saves us all the hassle of in-school fund-raising (such as last minute cookoffs and weird selling gimicks at Night Market). Not only is he willing to pay completely for his publication and printing costs, he's willing to cover our printing costs during the year as well as sponsor any of our computer/software needs. Margaret is drooling over the thought of getting Dreamweaver already, lol. So I really hope we can pull this through, especially since there's only four of us here (assuming Dave B. is even interested in working on this) and poor Margaret will get a lot of the work as the design head.

I think I'm going to stop translating for EoP after I finish this chapter of G-Defend. I just don't have the perseverence to stick with this gig. :\

As for web design, I'm finishing up on BS's website and [livejournal.com profile] dm_san wants me to code another layout for False Memories.

And it appears that I am most likely going to Otakon in August (assuming I work out all those pesky details and spring for my part of the monetary contribution). Anyone else going?

[livejournal.com profile] dm_san, come visit me in the Pitt! xD *glomp* I have the room to accomodate visitors since my roommate dropped out of the second summer session and I now have the room to myself. And along that line, I might go back to NYC for a week at the end of August.

PS Why does this song talk about sweeping floors?
