How 'bout dem Stillers?
Feb. 2nd, 2009 05:29 pmSo MASSIVE riot down by the Cathedral of Learning yesterday. Mike and I went down to watch from outside the crowd down by Schenley Plaza. The police (though only a few compared to the thousands of drunk college student from Pitt and CMU) were there in their riot gear.
First there was the usual fireworks and burning couches. Then people moved onto trying to taking street signs. One adventurous guy tried to take down an entire lamp post. Let's just say it became fucking mob mentality fast.
Mike wanted to go further into the crowd... >.<
So more police show up and they start herding the crowd down Forbes. Mike made a good point that destruction took time and moving people along would give them less time to destroy. The Carnegie museums had people on watch, telling people to say away.
We go home rather quickly after about 20 minutes. I was nervous around the crowd.
Then my roommate comes in later and tells us we missed the really "good" stuff. People took down the bust station, set really big fires, culminating in mounted police and tear gas (every riot needs some tear gas!).
At least no cars were flipped this year!
Not for the lack of trying, or so I've heard...
