Jan. 16th, 2006 01:54 pmThe bid for Chinese nannies/au pairs?
My mother told me about this a few weeks ago after it was in a Chinese newspaper. I was surprised to find such a similar article on BBC. There are definitely some misconceptions in the trend. It's not that simple just to pick up any language (and Chinese is a difficult language to begin with) without any reinforcement. If I was really completely truthful about my language orientations, I am a native Chinese speaker. English is most definitely my second language, but it is also my dominant language. Hell, it's one of the reasons I'm struggling to basically re-learn Chinese at this point. I lived with parents that spoke nothing but Chinese at me for the last 19 years of my life and look at me now... I speak at about the second to third grade level, read at about a third to fourth grade level, and write at a first grade level (elementary school levels). At most, these parents can only hope their children will pick up the basics of directions and how to ask where the bathroom is (which is something everyone should probably learn to ask in every language, lol).
