Yes, this is serious business to me
Sep. 7th, 2010 09:19 pmI am not nearly as well-equipped to address the concepts around social justice as many of the other bloggers out there. But this is in reference to my own LJ, so I am going to try and be as frank, compassionate, and passionate as possible. I am trying very hard not to snark or be passive-aggressive.
For anyone that disliked my last entry, know that I am not going to stop writing about such things even though it's not the main focus of my occasional blogging. You can argue that I have better things to worry about, but social justice, inclusion, and critique of pop culture are all things I am passionate about. The only way to effect change is to speak up, even if you open yourself to criticism and make others and yourself uncomfortable. I am trying my best to be part of the solution and should anyone want to actually engage in such conversations with good faith, I will do my best as well. Like anyone, I have my own set of privileges, so I hope I can be just as receptive when my own privileged words and actions are challenged. It's a learning process.
That being said though, I am aware of the fact that some may rather turn a blind eye to these discussions and I have no delusions that I'm going to change anyone's mind with a short post. Thus, anyone that doesn't want to entertain that type of dialogue or be subject to my personal thoughts on my LJ is free to unfriend/ignore me. I promise to not bring it to your doorstep and you can easily spend the rest of your life not having your privileges challenged. If necessary though, I will use the same discretion to ensure that my personal journal can remain a safe space. We are all adults here and have the freedom to make choices about what we spend our time on. I'd much rather people exercise that choice now than openly belittle my and other people's similar experiences later.
